The new interim leader of the BC Liberals says she had a sleepless night trying to decide how to pick her shadow cabinet.
Shirley Bond says while a number of Liberal incumbents were not re-elected in last month’s provincial election, there are plenty of new faces to choose from.
“One of the things that I said to the caucus as we were working our way through these processes and talking to each, we’re going to have to roll up our sleeves and do our homework,” she said during a media availability today.
“With a smaller number of people in the caucus room, it means that we’re going to have to make sure that people take their roles seriously. I have no doubt that they will.”
Bond says the Liberals are waiting for the NDP to unveil its cabinet first, which is set to happen on Thursday.
“I’m very confident that we are going to have the energy and the work ethic that is necessary to deal with not only with critic portfolios but also with important committee work,” she added. “Obviously, its going to take me a little bit of time, I know people are anxious to know what those appointments will be, but I made a commitment that I would make those in consultation with my colleagues.”
Bond, the Prince George-Valemount MLA has served as deputy premier, transportation minister, attorney general and in several other high-profile cabinet posts since being elected to office in 2001. She will now lead the party through a rebuild after it lost 13 seats to the NDP.
Bond takes over from Andrew Wilkinson who first indicated he would stay on as leader until a permanent successor was chosen, before resigning over the weekend in a facebook post.
“I see my role as making sure that we have an effective, professional opposition who can do their job and work to ask the hard questions and at the same time, allow the party to do the work that needs to take place preparing for a potential leadership campaign in the months ahead,” added Bond.
She also confirmed that she has no intention in pursuing the permanent leadership of the BC Liberals.
