It’s sad, it’s harmful, and it’s hurtful. That’s what B.C.’s provincial health officer says about people being put down by others when they test positive for COVID-19.
Dr. Bonnie Henry says that stigma has been an issue in schools particularly, but also in workplaces and in communities, when people have been open about testing positive for the virus.
“This virus doesn’t discriminate, but systems do, and we do. And right now, we have to take a step back and recognize that we need to protect ourselves and keep eachother safe by accepting that people are going to be infected and supporting them,” Henry says.
“Our contact tracers are hearing some of the stories. And it’s sad. It’s harmful, and it’s hurtful. We need to remember we’re not immune to this. And we all have to support each other.”
Henry says when someone tests positive for the virus or has to self-isolate, they need support from other people, not judgment.
