A Kamloops councillor is shedding light on protests in support of farmers of India.
The Indian government brought in policy changes for farmers in September, and Bill Sarai says the new rules threaten the livelihood of most farmers.
He says about three-quarters of farmers in India own less than two acres of land.
“What they plant on their fields is basically just to survive. And when something comes down from a government level tha threatens their survival, that’s what you’re seeing in India right now.”
Peaceful protests have popped up in cities everywhere, including one recently in Kamloops.
Sarai says it’s the largest peaceful protest in the history of the world.
“So I would just like to share that as a councilman here. I hope the rest of council and the mayor can stand with the farmers of India, and the farmers all over the world, because they do provide a valuable service.”
