The B.C. government is telling drivers to have patience, when it comes to getting a rebate cheque from ICBC.
The province expects to have a surplus of $410 million at the Crown corporation, which it attributes to fewer crash claims with people driving less during the pandemic.
The NDP promised in its election campaign that any profits at ICBC brought on by the pandemic would be passed on as rebates to drivers.
Finance Minister Selina Robinson was asked when that might now happen, and hints a decision will be made at the end of the fiscal year, on March 31, 2021.
“That’s something that we committed to. I know my colleague Mike Farnworth is watching the numbers, and is waiting to see thorugh to the end of the year to see what a rebate would look like. From reduced crashes and costs to ICBC.”
Crash claims were down nearly 40 per cent in the spring across the province, in the early months of the pandemic.
