The City of Kamloops says all of its $1.9-million-dollar budget for snow removal has been needed this year.
Streets Manager Glen Farrow says heavy snow in recent days has made sure every dime in this year’s snow budget has been needed.
“We’re right around that $2-million-dollar mark. The one thing to keep in mind, is our budget fiscal year is the same as the calendar year. So looking at the budget, it was for events that we had back in January and February and March. And I think we may have even had one in early April,” he says.
“And then… we had an event in October, another one in November; kind of abnormally large for as early as they were. For a couple weeks there was a bit of a lapse where there wasn’t much activity, which was great, in early December. Now over the past week we’ve been slammed pretty hard, which should spend every dime of the 2020 budget.”
Farrow points out in any year, the city will spend whatever is needed for snow removal.
In 2019, Farrow says the city came in under budget on snow removal, spending about $1.5 million of the budgeted $1.9 million. Any surplus in snow removal goes into general revenues.
