A manager in Kamloops with Interior Health reportedly went to Mexico on a non-essential trip last month.
Multiple sources have told NL News that Public Health Manager Leanne Calvin spent two weeks there on vacation, despite calls from public health officials themselves not to travel if they don’t need to.
“(Calvin) flew there while the nurses under her command cancelled holidays all year out of responsibility to a pandemic, while they worked overtime and weekends, while they had their vacations revoked, while everyone at that site is mentally and physically exhausted. Everybody cancelled their trips as they are not irresponsible during a pandemic. But not her,” one source says, who has asked to remain anonymous.
“She is supposed to be a role model for public health and lead by example.”
Interior Health says in a statement that it is aware of the allegations against Calvin.
“However, matters of human resources are confidential and we cannot comment any further at this time,” the health authority says.
Records show Calvin has been registered nurse for more than 17 years and that she’s held various positions with Interior Health in Kamloops over that time. She was previously a manager of the Ponderosa Lodge and the Hillside Psychiatric Centre.
NL News has reached out to Calvin for comment.
Public officials and many elected leaders have been chastised for travelling out of country over the holidays for vacations, when they have been telling people to stay home and avoid non-essential travel.
While travelling abroad is not against the law, is it being strongly recommended against by health officials because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
