For the first time, Interior Health has surpassed 1,000 active cases of COVID-19.
It’s at 1,058 active cases, and the death toll in the Interior also is now at 50, and 40 of those deaths have happened in the past month.
Good news is, the deadliest outbreak in the Interior so far has now ended, which was at McKinney Place in Oliver. In total, 17 out of 61 residents have died from the virus at that facility, and there were 78 total cases affecting 55 residents and 23 staff.
“This has been one of our most challenging outbreaks so far and I’m happy to see this outbreak declared over,” chief medical health officer Dr. Albert de Villiers says.
“As the vaccination rollout continues across Interior Health, I am hopeful we will see fewer outbreaks in our long-term care facilities.”
In total, B.C. reported 1,330 new cases over the weekend, as well as 31 deaths from the virus. There are now 4,326 active cases and 343 people in hospital with the virus, and 68 people in intensive care. Of those, 257 cases and four deaths were in Interior Health.
Within IH, there were two deaths at Noric House in Vernon, one at the Heritage Retirement Residence in West Kelowna and one at Sunnybank in Oliver.
In Kamloops, meanwhile, an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre has grown to 18 cases, involving 14 residents and four staff.
Also, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says 87,346 people have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with plans to vaccinate another 26,775 people this week despite some shortfalls in delivery of the Pfizer vaccine as announced last week.
