Kamloops Councillor Arjun Singh is joining the CleanBC Climate Council after being appointed by Environment and Climate Change Minister George Heyman.
Singh says he is looking forward to helping advise the government on meeting the goals around climate action and greenhouse gas reduction. “While also making sure that economy is kept vibrant, strong and also making sure the people who might be in-ordinarily impacted by carbon taxes or those kinds of things that are related to climate action, we’re also mindful of the impacts that could be negative on those folks and try to mitigate that.”
Singh says it is a challenging piece of work but it brings with it a lot of opportunity. ” I think that the council is really tasked with offering independent advice to government. Hopefully the Liberal party of BC, the Green Party of BC, other parties, the Conservative Party of British Columbia are kind of following the work of the council and hopefully can have interactions there as well because I think it is important that it be non-partisan.”
“Climate action has been a critical part of my work at the City of Kamloops and through my role as a past president of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and chair of the UBCM Special Climate Action Committee” says Singh. “I look forward to working with members of the Climate Solutions Council to build on their work providing independent advice to government on CleanBC and a clean economy.”
Singh also noted that having a local voice around tables such as this are good for the community and allows him to bring information back to home.
Minister Heyman thanked both incoming members as Summerland Mayor Toni Boot also joins the council. “They both bring strong skills and experience to support their commitment to building a cleaner, stronger future for all British Columbians.”
Other members of the CleanBC Climate Counil welcomed the pair including Co-chair, B.C.’s Climate Solutions Council, and vice-president of corporate relations, Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. Colleen Giroux-Schmidt. “The Climate Solutions Council welcomes our newest members. They bring important perspectives to our discussions on quickly moving to a clean and competitive economy. We look forward to continuing our work to help address climate change and providing strong, independent advice to government on meeting our climate goals.”
