Kamloops RCMP say one of their officers was injured after responding to a shoplifting incident downtown this afternoon.
Spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn says police were called just after 2:15 p.m. to the 400-block of Lansdowne Street, by someone who was following the suspect on foot.
The officer who responded called for backup saying he was injured, according to Evelyn, who confirmed that a suspect was arrested with the help of a police dog after he was found hiding in a store not far away from the scene.
A 19-year-old Kamloops man has been arrested, and police are recommending charges including assaulting a police officer. That person was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The injured Mountie was also taken to Royal Inland Hospital, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Evelyn says no weapon was used in the alleged assault, and its unclear how the officer was injured.
And its unclear at this time if the Independent Investigations Office will be investigating this case.
