A COVID-19 outbreak is now over on the Canim Lake Band.
The community with barely 230 residents saw 66 COVID-19 cases and two deaths during the outbreak.
Chief Helen Henderson says she’s proud of her residents and grateful for support from other communities.
Residents on the band were in lock down for more than three weeks last month, which meant not being able to leave home for school, appointments, groceries or errands.
The lockdown was lifted on Jan. 30 for households that were no longer impacted by the virus.
“It is our strong family values that allowed COVID to take hold in our community. But it is also our strong community values that allowed us to pull together and do what was needed for the good of the community as a whole,” Henderson says.
The outbreak had first been declared on Jan. 11, and shortly after that all band members were offered a COVID-19 vaccine.
