A Kamloops family says a local BC Transit bus driver has gone above and beyond for a young fan.
Ben Crummey was only two years old when his mom Jennifer says he started showing a big interest in the bus that stopped outside his daycare in the fall. Ben waved at the bus – and over time – driver Bret Weir began waving back – even stopping and chatting – and asking Ben about his day.
“Everyday I’d pick up Ben and he’d have to run to the bus stop and wait for Bret to pull up and honk his horn and eventually Ben got to go on the bus and honk the horn himself,” Jennifer told NL News.
“Ben would tell everybody he knows. His daycare, random people that were at the bus stop that it was his bus driver and he was waiting for his driver to come. He would tell everybody that Bret was his best friend.”
Bret’s on a different bus route now – but he and the Crummey’s have become Facebook friends. She says the whole experience has had an uplifting influence on the whole family – during a difficult year for everyone.
“Just the other day Bret sent a little video message to Ben that he played over and over when he got home,” Jennifer added.
“I don’t think [Bret] realizes what a difference he’s made to our life especially in a time like this year which has been very challenging for everting and COVID.”
And she says the Crummey’s hope that a little recognition puts a smile on Bret’s face today, on Transit Driver Appreciation Day.
