After reporting the highest one-day COVID-19 case count of the year yesterday, B.C. has smashed that record today.
There were 908 new cases reported province-wide, as well as three deaths from the virus.
There were 43 new cases in Interior Health, compared to 438 in Fraser Health, 294 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 78 in Northern Health and 55 in Island Health.
Active cases have gone up to 6,245 today, compared to 5,856 yesterday. There are now 294 people in hospital with the virus (12 fewer than yesterday) and 81 people in intensive care units (two more).
Another 140 variant of concern cases have also been found in the province. Health officials there have been 1,912 total variant cases found, saying 258 are active and the rest have recovered.
“Seeing different friends on different days – even if we are outside – is unsafe. So is gathering in our homes where the layers of protection, like physical barriers and masks, are not used,” Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says.
“Social connections and the sharing of a meal or a hug is important for us all, yet we must be vigilant that our need for those connections doesn’t put ourselves or those we care about in harm’s way. Rather, step away from our screens and step outside with our small core group of close contacts.”
Meanwhile, now 637,856 vaccine doses have been administered in B.C. to just over 550,000 people.
Interior Health has reached a milestone vaccine total today, saying 101,000 doses have been administered across the region.
Anyone in B.C. who is born in 1947 or later, or any Indigenous resident born in 1966 or later, is able to call and book a vaccine appointment. The number to call to book an appointment can be found here.
Starting Monday, residents of any age who are “clinically extreme vulnerable” will be able to call and book a vaccine appointment. Those people would’ve received a letter saying they are considered as such.
