UPDATE:
The Kamloops-Thompson School District says all lockdowns at schools in North Kamloops and Brocklehurst have been lifted, after a threat was made against NorKam Secondary this afternoon.
“All schools in North Kamloops and Brocklehurst have now been dismissed [under supervision of the RCMP],” a statement from the school district said, at 4:02 p.m.. “Students and staff are safe.”
After that statement, it took a full hour before students at NorKam began to flood out of the school and were actually allowed to leave.
School District spokesperson, Diana Skoglund, told NL News the lockdowns started at around 1:45 p.m. More than half a dozen schools were impacted.
“It [was] just out of an abundance of caution,” she told NL News.
Patrick Rawlings is the father of a Grade 10 student at NorKam. He spoke to NL News outside the school while waiting to pick up his son.
“He texted me at 2:58 p.m. to say he wouldn’t be out at 3 o’clock because the school’s in lockdown. I asked him what’s going on, but he said he doesn’t know,” Rawlings said. “He was telling me there are police. I arrived here around 3:10 p.m. and just saw the one police unit,” Rawlings says.
“I’m keeping in touch with him but I’m not hearing anything about what’s going on.”
It is not clear yet what prompted the lockdowns to be put in place.
“Police are still investigating the nature of the threat,” RCMP spokesperson, Const. Crystal Evelyn said. “No further information is available at this time.”
Evelyn was asking parents to stay away from the schools over the course of the afternoon while the school was locked down. She said the lockdowns would be lifted once RCMP were able to determine that the threat was false and the area was safe.
“I know that that can be tough for parents. I myself as a parent and I get it. It is hard to ask you to stay away when you know there is a police presence in the area,” she told NL News.
“But again we ask people to stay clear for the safety of them as well as anybody else in the area so that we can actually do a proper investigation.”
