Kamloops Fire Rescue has been called to a fire at Cooney Bay this afternoon, which can be seen from many areas of the city.
The blaze was reported to emergency crews just before 4:30 p.m.
Winds have helped fan the flames, as wins gusts hit 52 kilometres per hour earlier this hour at the Kamloops Airport, according to Environment Canada.
A cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but early reports indicate it was a bonfire that spread into driftwood before taking off.
As of 4:45 p.m., BC Wildfire Service crews had been called to the fire scene.
“Lots of smoke but it may not be as big as it appears. Wind is driving smoke across the ground making it look larger,” NL News reporter Brett Mineer says from the fire scene.
This is the second grassfire reported in the Kamloops area today; there is an active fire within Neskonlith Indian Band land near Strawberry Heights Road, which is estimated to be 12 hectares in size.
NL News will update this story with more information as it comes available.
More to come.
