UPDATED 3 p.m.
A grassfire is now under control and being mopped up on Tk’emlups Reserve land, near the North Thompson River.
It broke out at about 11:15 a.m., not far from a trail off of Sarcee Street West in the Mount Paul Industrial Park.
Kamloops Fire Rescue Platoon Capt. Shawn Davidson says crews responded with two bush trucks, a tender and a fire engine, and 10 BC Wildfire Service members responded as well.
“It was approximately 100 by 300 (feet) in size, and it had some aggressive fire behaviour and high winds in the beginning. But the guys did a good job at knocking the fire down, and now they’re just in the mop up stages.”
The BC Wildfire Service had the blaze listed at 0.79 hectares in size, or just under two acres in size.
Tk’emlups Indian Band councillor Thomas Blank told NL News there’s no structural values at risk. The closest homes are several hundred metres away to the north of the fire and a cemetery is also nearby.
It’s also unclear how the fire may have started at this point but it is believed to be human-caused.
Davidson is asking people to be careful with any ignition sources, saying conditions are dry and there hasn’t been much rain lately in the Kamloops area.
