A dog breeder north of Kamloops had 38 miniature dachshunds seized by the SPCA yesterday.
The SPCA says the dogs were living in “substandard” and “filthy” conditions, in cages and with high amounts of feces and urine and objects that could injure the dogs.
Spokesperson Eileen Drever says the owner was breeding the dogs for profit.
“We had attended the property and given the owner opportunities to improve the conditions for the animals as is required under our legislation, but when the owner did not comply a warrant was obtained to remove the dogs for their safety and well-being,” she says, also telling NL News that a warrant was carried out yesterday.
The SPCA says the dachshunds, commonly called wiener dogs, are now receiving veterinary care and behavioural support. It says they are “poorly socialized” and “very fearful.”
Drever suspects the puppies were about three months old and wasn’t immediately sure how old the adults were. She says it’s unclear at this point when they could go up for adoption.
