While a cluster of COVID-19 cases has surfaced in Sun Peaks, a mobile vaccine clinic won’t be arriving for several more weeks.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the cluster had grown to 25 cases.
The clinic from May 4 to 7 will be for all adults aged 18 and older. Interior Health says at this time it is not planning to move up those dates so Sun Peaks residents can get vaccines earlier was done for residents in Big White and Whistler.
“So far, we have not seen the widespread transmission in Sun Peaks that we saw in Big White and other ski hills,” IH said, in a statement to NL News.
Big White saw 237 cases over three-and-a-half months. Whistler, meanwhile, has had hundreds of cases in recent weeks because of the P.1 Brazil variant, according to B.C. health officials.
“I really respect that (Interior Health Authority) has had their hands full trying to manage this virus, and they’ve set us up for those dates in May,” Sun Peaks <ayor Al Raine said. “We are just going to have to pay attention for the next couple of weeks and hopefully May rolls around sooner than later. And then everybody will get vaccinated up here.”
On Monday, Raine told NL News that attitudes in the community changed almost instantly after 15 COVID-19 cases were first reported on Saturday.
“I do think getting the word out in the community and making everyone aware is going to help,” Raine said. “And I know that… it’s very, very quiet. People are paying attention.”
