The MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson says its disappointing that there was no mention of a Cancer Centre in Kamloops in the most recent BC Budget.
Todd Stone says it means the NDP will likely break a promise made by Premier John Horgan in October, when he said the facility would be up and running in four years.
“In the detailed budget estimates document, not a single penny is allocated to this, not even planning dollars,” he said, on NL Newsday.
“So its hard not to look at this and realize that the people of Kamloops are being betrayed yet again by the NDP when it comes to a commitment around putting a cancer centre, a much needed cancer centre, in our community.”
While in Kamloops, on the campaign trail in October, Premier John Horgan said a new cancer care clinic will be up and running in Kamloops within four years if he’s reelected as Premier.
“[The Premier] made a specific trip to make a specific commitment around putting a cancer centre in Kamloops, and he said it would happen within that four year time frame,” Stone added.
“It is beyond disappointment to see that there is no mention of it whatsoever in the budget.”
Back in January, Health Minister Adrian Dix told NL News that planning for the Kamloops Cancer Centre is underway, with the city part of the NDP’s ten year cancer plan.
“We’re going to lay that plan out for the people of B.C. We’ve made a commitment and you saw some of the details on the campaign and now people at the BC Cancer Agency are putting together the plan and putting it in place,” Dix said.
“What we committed to in the election campaign is a ten year cancer plan and I think that makes a lot of sense.”
No mention or money in the budget for this promised Cancer Centre. In fact the letter we had sent in Feb with very straightforward questions has not even gotten a response. #Kamloops residents have seen this NDP movie before #bcpoli @toddstonebc https://t.co/l3y9B185lq

There’s no money and no mention in NDP’s Budget of John Horgan’s election promise to build a Cancer Centre in Kamloops within 4 years – which means it won’t happen. This is the second time NDP promised – then reneged – on Cancer Centre in Kamloops. #bcpoli https://t.co/HdOSvSWuTQ
