The Kamloops Rotary Food Drive brought in a major haul over the weekend during the spring Rotary Food Drive.
Food Bank Executive Director Bernadette Siracky says over 62,000 pounds of food and over $3,500 cash was brought in by Rotarians.
“It was breath-taking. We had a reduced number of volunteers on site because we were trying to ensure social distance,” she said on the NL Noon Report. “We were all wearing masks, as were all of the Rotarians, but honestly the food started coming in earlier and the vehicles were overflowing with yellow bags.”
Siracky says in terms of the amount of food collected – out of 26 food drives since 2008 – this one finishes in the top five – outdone only by the same event last year when 70,000 pounds of food was collected.
“[This year]. that’s over 30-tons of food in one day that is going to feed our community’s most vulnerable. This year our most vulnerable has taken on quite a different picture than it has in the past,” Siracky added.
“It’s added a lot of new people. We have noticed a different demographic of people who are requiring our service and who likely won’t into the long-term.”
WOW – What a day! We received 62,000 lbs of food & over $3500!
Thank you to every person for giving so generously!
