UPDATED: 11:35 a.m.
RCMP say a 64-year-old man from Aldergrove was killed on the Coquihalla last night, north of Merritt, after his semi-truck rear-ended another commercial truck.
The crash happened at about 6:15 p.m. last night in the northbound lanes near the Surrey Lake Summit, and the driver of the trailing semi was killed on impact.
The driver of the other semi-truck involved was a man in his 40s, according to police, who was “relatively uninjured” from the crash. Mounties say both trucks had extensive damage.
When the crash happened, police say visibility was clear and skies were clear, and the roadway was bare and dry, with the temperature at the summit at about 11 degrees Celsius.
The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for nine hours after the accident, until just after 3 a.m. this morning.
Logan Lake RCMP are now leading the investigation and anyone with details is asked to call Logan Lake RCMP, at 250-523-6222.
