Just like the Western Hockey League, the BC Hockey League will end its pandemic shortened 20-game season without playoffs.
The league says it will end its regular season on May 11 as scheduled, meaning the Fred Page Cup will not be awarded for the second straight season.
“Since we were shut down in November, our priority was to provide our athletes with an opportunity to showcase themselves to NCAA coaches and NHL scouts,” said BCHL Executive Director Steven Cocker.
“We are thrilled that we were able to reward our players for all of the hard work they put in during what was a difficult and challenging season. We look forward to returning to a more normal schedule next year and once again crowning a BCHL champion.”
BCHL games are being played in Port Alberni, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Penticton, and Vernon.
Cocker says the BCHL will hand out individual awards for the Most Valuable Player, top defenceman, top goalie, top rookie, and top scorer in each of the five pods, instead of the traditional end of year awards.
It will also crown a champion from each of the five pods based on points or point percentage if teams are unable to play all of their games.
The Merritt Centennials are in last place in the Chilliwack pod with four points in 13 games. The Salmon Arm Silverbacks meanwhile are second in the Vernon pod with 15 points in 14 games.
