Two Kamloops-based theatre companies are working together to host an online theatre, music, improv, and dance festival in the city next month.
The Remergence Festival is the brainchild of Chimera Theatre and Western Canada Theatre, and it will take place from May 5 to 15.
WCT Artistic Director James MacDonald says the idea was born out of the YKA Strong Pandemic Playhouse series from last fall.
“We planned to bring it back in the same format this spring but of course we’re still in a lockdown so we decided to switch it all online. And at the same time, Chimera Theatre, they were planning their Hydra festival which is the third version of that,” he said on the NL Morning News.
“We realized there’s a lot of crossover there so we’ve created this excited and unique partnership with Chimera.”
In all, there will be over 24 local acts plus a free family-friendly Saturday matinee on May 8.
“A few things that are going on. Many people know Cvetozar Vutev, who’s first violin at the Symphony. He’s got a great new show about Mozart’s father that he’s doing with Curtis Howell,” MacDonald said.
“As well, Freudian Slips are up with us doing online improve, if you can imagine that, along with a new troupe called Some People, and I’m dying to see how online improv works.”
Tickets start as low as $5, and a full festival pass available for $150.
“The format of it is, at 7, 8, and 9 o’clock, every night except Monday. If you buy your ticket for one night, you get three acts in there,” MacDonald added.
“There are two plays, one at 7 o’clock and one at 9 o’clock, those are both streamed live from the Pavilion Theatre, and then in between you get some fantastic musical entertainment at 8 o’clock.”
