More details on 10 new affordable housing being built on the Tk’emlúps Indian Band.
Chief Rosanne Casimir says two fourplexes and two rancher-style homes will be built on Tyee Way, off of Chief Louis Way.
“We do have some existing elder units over there, so some of these are going to be replacing those. They’ve definitely exceeded their lifespan. And we just want to be able to provide some nice new housing. And with this joint initiative, we’re pretty excited about it.”
Casimir says those homes will be built for elders who live on reserve.
She says the federal government is giving the band $3.5 million for the new housing.
“We definitely had to apply for funding, and we will definitely be utilizing our own-source revenue as well to do any type of top-ups. And this is something that has definitely been in our realm for some time, looking at replacing our old housing stock.”
Casimir called the construction timeline “incredible,” saying work will start soon and the homes will be move-in ready by the end of September.
