The Kamloops branch of the BCSPCA is launching a pilot project to help lower income households spay and neuter their cats, in the face of what they call a cat overpopulation crisis in the city.
Community engagement manager Ashley Fontaine says an assessment last year determined that cost is the number-one barrier to people getting access to veterinary care for their cats.
“So to offset that we are offering a free service. We’re asking for a $20-dollar commitment fee and we encourage people to go online and fill out the application and see if they are eligible.”
If approved, the SPCA will take care of the spay or neuter, as well as vaccinations and microchipping.
She says they hope to spay or neuter 375 owned cats in the next two to three months under the program.]
