
The number of new COVID-19 cases dropped each day over the May long weekend, as the number of active cases in B.C. is at its lowest total in six-and-a-half months.
There were 974 new cases between Saturday to today, and 12 deaths from the virus in that time. The new cases included 356 on Saturday, 325 on Sunday and 293 today.
In Interior Health there were 117 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. Elsewhere, there were 630 cases in Fraser Health, 157 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 44 in Northern Health and 25 in Island Health.
Active cases are now at 3,953, which is the first time since the Nov. 6 update that active cases are below 4,000 in B.C. Hospitalizations are now at 292, dropping below 300 for the first time since April 2, while the number of intensive care patients with the virus is 97, which is the lowest its been since April 5.
Meanwhile, for vaccine doses, there were 141,468 doses administered in the past three days. That raises the total number of vaccines administered to 2,885,488, which includes 147,144 second doses.
In a joint statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix hinted at B.C.’s restart plan that will be unveiled tomorrow. They did not offer details yet of what will be announced, but are asking people to “stay the course today” with provincial health orders that are in place.
Tomorrow at 1 p.m., Premier John Horgan, Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon, Henry and Dix will be hosting a news conference to say what restrictions will be eased, and what to expect beyond that.
“Circuit breaker” restrictions, which have been in place since March 29 and ban indoor dining and indoor fitness classes, are set to expire at midnight tonight. Non-essential travel restrictions between three “zones” in the province are also set to expire at midnight.
