In the final days of travel restrictions on B.C. highways, no fines were issued for non-essential travel.
RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet says 5,125 vehicles were stopped over the May long weekend, from Friday to Monday, between the four highway road checks on Highways 1, 3, 5 and 99.
Shoihet says between those road checks, 96 vehicles turned around on their own and another 10 vehicles were forced to turn around. But no fines for non-essential travel were handed out.
For the Coquihalla specifically, at the road check near the Old Toll Booth, Shoihet says there were 3,123 vehicles checked with 13 that voluntarily turned around and four other vehicles told to turn around by police.
Meanwhile, travel restrictions now remain in place until June 15, as announced early this afternoon by the B.C. government. That prevents people from travelling across three different zones in B.C. on provincial highways. Those road checks have been in place periodically since May 6.
The B.C. government had outlined more than 20 reasons for what was considered essential travel. Commercial vehicles are exempt from having to stop at those road checks.
