B.C.’s top doctor says there will likely eventually be a vaccine passport for international travel.
But Dr. Bonnie Henry says that will not be the case for travelling within this province.
“This virus has shown us that us that there are inequities in our society, which have been exacerbated by this pandemic. And there is no way that we would recommend inequities be increased by use of things like vaccine passports for services, for public access, here in British Columbia,” Henry says.
“I do think it will be something that will be necessary to support international travel. And that is something we’re working with our colleagues and the public health agency and at the federal level, to make sure Canadians have access to travel in the same way that other countries do as well.”
It’s unclear, though, if a vaccine passport would be needed within B.C. to go to larger, non-essential events, like concerts or sporting events.
Henry says she continues to work with the BC Ombudsperson Jay Chalke and provincial and federal counterparts to make sure that a vaccine passport would be fair for Canadians.
