Later today, B.C. health officials are expected to announced that the second-dose timeline will be moved up for Pfizer vaccines.
Right now, the interval between doses is 13 weeks in B.C.. It had been extended by health officials to 16 weeks to allow more people to get a first vaccine dose sooner, and based on growing supply it was dropped to 13 weeks earlier this month.
Reports suggest the timeline could be moved to 50 days, when health officials hold a news conference at 2 p.m. today.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry was asked about some people getting notifications last weekend to book a second dose appointment well ahead of 16 weeks.
“We’re looking at the amount of vaccine we have coming in, and we need to reprogram our system to send out the automatic bookings. And they were doing that over the weekend, and they did have a glitch, where invitations went out to a certain number of people for a very short period of time.”
Henry says those bookings will be honoured and says rest assured, second-dose appointment bookings will be starting in a more structured way in the coming days.
“But yes, everybody will be moved up. Those appointments will be coming available. We’ll be getting second doses into people quickly.”
She has also suggests people who received Moderna or Astra-Zeneca for a first dose will be able to get Pfizer for their second dose, but that has not yet been confirmed. A study from the U.K. will be done next week which is expected to say whether that will be possible.
