RCMP in Kelowna says the body of Brian Lannon, a Kamloops Fire Captain who west missing in Okanagan Lake two-and-a-half weeks ago on May 15 has been found.
Spokesperson Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy says around 7 a.m. today, a passerby found what appeared to be a body in the water just south of the William R. Bennett Bridge in Kelowna. The body was brought to shore and RCMP will be working with the BC Coroners Service as it continues its investigation.
The search for Lannon’s body began shortly after he went missing while recreationally diving with some friends near the Bennett Bridge. It was briefly called off last Tuesday before resuming five days later on Sunday.
“We would like to thank our partners with the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR), and the Kelowna and Kamloops Fire and Rescue for all their efforts over the past few weeks conducting this search,” West Kelowna RCMP Staff Sgt. Duncan Dixon said, in a statement.
“We would also like to extend our condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers who are experiencing this terrible loss.”
Lannon was a 27-year member of Kamloops Fire Rescue having joined the department in 1994.
Regarded by his peers as a loving husband, son, brother, and uncle, and as a dedicated member of Kamloops Fire and Rescue, Lannon was on his days off when he disappeared and was scheduled to return to work on May 18.
“You know one of the amazing things about being here is how tight knit of a group we are. Most of us have close connection off the job that we spend time on days off with friends from work, and when something like this happens, it hits everyone hard because of those connections,” KFR spokesperson Jamie Chase told NL News.
“He could come across as being very serious but he was such a kind person. He was a total professional. You know he demanded as much out of his crew but once he had your trust, he would do absolutely anything for you. He was a truly kind, caring, generous person.”
Police say there is no further information to be released at this time.
