A Kamloops councillor says he’s worried about negative activity potentially continuing at a North Shore social agency in the coming months.
Arjun Singh brought up the social service agency at Tuesday’s council meeting, saying The Loop has caused negative impacts around the Tranquille corridor. The property it works out of, 405A Tranquille Road, has now been deemed a nuisance property by the city.
“This is one particular organization that I feel is really trying to do noble and blessed work, but they’re not able to sustain it in a way that it can be a good neighbour. So I don’t know, I’m kind of at wits end here, I don’t know if we have anything that really we can do,” Singh says.
The city says it continues to work with The Loop and the property owner to address complaints.
“The property owner is the only person that we have any legal enforcement on. So we said to the property owner, ‘you need to take responsibility for your tenant.’ And then we’re working with the tenant as well, as part of our social outreach, to make sure they’re providing a service that’s supportive of what we need to see in the community,” director of community and protective services Byron McCorkell says.
The Loop program coordinator Glenn Hilke maintain the agency is a good neighbour on the North Shore.
“When the city says to us, ‘help us with this problem, bring them to your property,’ which we do, the whole person comes. The person comes with their shopping carts. The person comes with their substance use issues. The person comes with their mental health challenges.”
Hilke says the program has helped people get into housing, detox and treatment centres.
