The BC Government has bought the former Fortune Motel in Kamloops with plans to initially turn it into 40 supportive housing units for people experiencing homelessness.
BC Housing will also work with the City of Kamloops and the community on a plan for the permanent use of the property located at 654 Fortune Drive on the North Shore, at the intersection of Vernon Avenue.
“Buying this property means that dozens of people who are struggling to find a place to live in Kamloops will have safe and secure shelter, as we work with the community on plans for this property to provide the housing people need for years to come,” David Eby, B.C.’s Minister Responsible for Housing said, in a statement.
“While there is much more to do, helping people come inside, keeping them off of the streets and out of the parks, is good news for them and the community.”
Renovations will be underway with the housing units expected to open in early fall. It will include an amenity and programming space, as well as upgrades to the rooms to ensure the property is secure and safe for residents and the community.
BC Housing is also looking to find a non-profit operator to manage the site with staff on location 24-7. The future operator will be responsible for daily meals, mentorship, and life-skills training. It will also be responsible to support residents access to mental health and addiction treatment.
The future operator will also have to set up a community advisory committee to address any concerns raised by people in the neighbourhood.
