Some good news for residents of the Lytton area affected by the George Road wildfire as the Thompson Nicola Regional District says the evacuation alert for Electoral Area “I” has been rescinded.
The alert had been in place since Thursday afternoon, affecting about 10 homes in the area.
“Should conditions change, an Evacuation Alert and/or Evacuation Order could be reinstated as necessary,” the TNRD said, in a statement.
The BC Wildfire Service says with fire activity dying down, crews were able to more accurately map the wildfire over the weekend. It is now estimated to be 350 hectares in size, burning southeast of Lytton.
“Although the fire looks inactive, it is still burning in the inoperable terrain,” the BC Wildfire Service said in a statement yesterday. “As temperatures increase throughout this week, our crews will continue their hard work and suppression efforts by ground and air.”
The fire started six nights ago and is believed to be human-caused, although an exact cause has not been determined. As of this morning, it is still burning out of control with 60 personnel on site along with eight helicopters, two water tenders, and two pieces of heavy equipment.
“As we are moving into hotter and drier weather, we are working with our partners and land managers to create a long term management and monitor strategy for the upper areas of the fire that our ground crews cannot action due to safety concerns,” the BC Wildfire Service said.
