Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc is opening a cooling centre at the Sk’elep School of Excellence gym because of the extended heat wave in the Kamloops area.
It says the facility will be open everyday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Just like Sandman Centre, there will be COVID-19 protocols will be in place including the use of masks and physical distancing. Your temperature will also be taken before you’re allowed inside.
“There will be no food in the gymnasium and only closed drink containers will be allowed,” a statement from Tk’emlúps said. “The washrooms are available.”
“The only entrance will be through the back doors of the gymnasium. Please park at the north side of the Sk’elep School of Excellence and use the walkway to the back doors of the gym. Knock on the door when you arrive and security personal will allow access.”
Yesterday was the hottest day ever in Kamloops history with a temperature of 44 C, smashing the previous record high of 41.7 C which had been set in July of 1939 and again in July of 1941.
Temperatures could reach 44 C again today and 45 C tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Lytton lived up to its moniker of “Canada’s Hot Spot” setting the all-time record for the warmest temperature ever recorded in Canada at 44.6 C.
A heat warning remains in place for most of B.C., all of Alberta, central Saskatchewan, parts of Manitoba and Northwest Territories and part of southern Yukon.
