Kamloops RCMP are asking people to be on the lookout for a memorial plaque for three slain officers was stolen from Peterson Creek Park.
Spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn says it happened around 9:32 a.m. on Monday morning, July 26.
The plaque stolen was in memory of three Kamloops RCMP constables who were killed near that place nearly 60 years ago, on June 18, 1962 – Elwood Joseph Keck, Gordon Eric Pedersen, and Donald George Weisgerber, who were shot and killed while responding to a call involving a man with a gun.
“For someone to deface and steal a memorial honouring constables who died while trying to protect the residents of this community is really sad, it’s shameful to say the least,” Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Syd Lecky said. “I can’t imagine how the families of these constables, and of the countless other constables who risk their lives on behalf of this city, must feel knowing someone would steal a plaque recognizing their sacrifice.”
“Someone knows what happened to the plaque. Please do the right thing and return the plaque to the Kamloops RCMP or the Peterson Creek Park.”
Anyone with information about this theft or the whereabouts of the plaque is asked to call Kamloops RCMP and reference file 2021-25646.
