It’s the first COVID-19 outbreak in a care home in Kamloops during the pandemic’s fourth wave.
The province has declared an outbreak at Kamloops Seniors Village on Hugh Allan Drive, which is now the nineteenth active outbreak in B.C. at long-term care, assisted living or acute care facilities.
Interior Health says three residents and two staff at the care home have tested positive for COVID-19.
This outbreak comes as B.C. has reported another 655 COVID-19 cases today, with 242 being in Interior Health. Elsewhere, there are 186 new cases in Fraser Health, 99 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 68 in Island Health and 60 in Northern Health.
Two deaths have also been reported today from COVID-19, both being on Vancouver Island.
Hospitalizations continue to rise considerably, with now 187 people in hospital with COVID-19 and 103 of those people in intensive care. That’s 13 more people in hospital and 12 more in ICU compared to just yesterday. Four weeks ago, on August 3, there were 53 people in hospital with the virus and 19 in ICU.
Another 10,751 vaccine doses have been administered in the past day, including 4,739 first doses. Among B.C. residents 12 and older, 84.3 per cent of people have received a first dose while 76.5 per cent of people are fully vaccinated. The first-dose rate is now 85 per cent for people 18 and older.
In the past week, from August 23-29, health officials say 70 per cent of new cases were people who are unvaccinated, while breakthrough cases in people fully vaccinated made up 20 per cent of cases. For hospitalizations from COVID-19, in the past two weeks, officials say those who are unvaccinated made up 80.6 per cent while partially vaccinated people made up 8.1 per cent, and fully vaccinated people made up 11.3 per cent.
