The B.C. government says the provincial state of emergency put in place due to the 2021 wildfire season will end at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
In a statement, the Ministry of Public Safety says it is based on advice from emergency management and wildfire officials as cooler seasonal weather and precipitation is in the forecast in the days and weeks ahead.
“Combined with the hard work of firefighters from B.C., Canada, and abroad to contain and extinguish fires, it means that B.C. can allow the state of emergency to end and return to a standard emergency response,” the statement said.
“While the provincial state of emergency is no longer required, the wildfire season is not over. It is vital that the public remain prepared and follow the continued direction of local authorities.”
The statement says the government will continue to take whatever action is needed to respond to the ongoing wildfire situation and to support the recovery of communities that have been affected.
The state of emergency was declared on July 20 after repeated requests from governments in the Interior like the Thompson Nicola Regional District.
As of Sept. 13, there were 205 wildfires still burning in B.C., with three evacuation orders affecting approximately 223 properties and 12 evacuation alerts affecting approximately 254 properties.
So far this fire season, there have been 1,585 fires that have burned 8,686 square kilometers of land in the province.
“At the height of the summer, 3,631 personnel were helping fight the fires, including support from Mexico, Australia and across Canada,” the Province said. “Approximately 32,000 people were displaced, and 19,807 people registered with Emergency Support Services.”
On Friday, a campfire ban in the Kamloops Fire Centre was also rescinded, though a ban remains in place on larger Category 2 and 3 fires as well as fireworks, sky lanterns, and burn barrels are still banned as of this moment.
Those restrictions are set to be eased on Oct. 15.
