A new 142,500 square foot Finning Canada facility will rise on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc lands.
In a statement, the company says the multi-million dollar facility will be twice the size of its current Valleyview location. It will include office, shop, and warehouse space, as well a utility building.
Finning Canada also says it will also create about 100 new jobs to meet growing customer needs locally and in Canada.
“We welcome Finning to the traditional unceded territory of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc with the sincere wish for the business and their employees to be successful and prosperous,” Tk’emlúps Councilor Justin Gottfriedson said, in a statement.
“Our community looks forward to the development of a strong and healthy relationship where we learn and grow together.”
Located at 1357 Kootenay Way, the land was blessed by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Land and Culture team and elder, Freda Jules, on Sept. 16 before construction began.
“It was an honour to have Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc guide us through the ceremony to prepare this land for our new building, we are grateful for their support,” Kevin Parkes, the president of Finning Canada, said.
“Finning is proud to be a part of this community we have lived and worked in for several decades and we are thrilled to create a space that will not only offer a more sustainable footprint but provide employment opportunities in the area.”
The building is designed to be more energy efficient than the current location, the company says, with improved heating and cooling, as well as efficient lighting, wash water recycling, and onsite renewable energy.
It is set to be open in the Fall of 2022.
