The reopening of the Third Avenue pedestrian bridge may be further delayed after it was hit by a vehicle Sunday night.
That is according to an update from Kamloops City staff during a committee meeting Monday morning, though RCMP tell NL News they have had no report about a crash relating to the bridge.
“There was a two vehicle collision [on Saturday] but it didn’t have anything to do with the bridge,” Cpl. Dana Napier said. “There was nothing on file for yesterday, just that one for Saturday. I read through it several times and there was nothing there for the bridge.”
Last week, City of Kamloops Capital Projects Manger, Darren Crundwell, told NL News that the bridge was on track to reopen this Saturday, Oct. 2, one week before the Kamloops Blazers home opener at Sandman Centre, which is set for Oct. 9.
The bridge has been closed for rehabilitation work since May 25 with crews repairing and sealing concrete as well as making improvements to the handrails. They were also planning to replace the plexiglass panels at the top of the bridge.
Work was initially expected to be completed in mid-July, though Crundwell says the initial delay came about as staff were waiting for some materials – including paint – to be delivered before they could reopen the bridge to the public.
It wasn’t immediately clear how much damage was caused by Sunday’s apparent crash, though photos show the concrete steps of the bridge at the intersection with Lansdowne Street appear to have been damaged.
NL News has reached out to the City of Kamloops and will update this story when more details are known
