The victim in Sunday’s fatal motorcycle crash in Valleyview has been identified on social media as Kamloops resident, Donavin Akerley.
RCMP say the crash between a white Suzuki motorcycle and a black Dodge Ram happened at 6:50 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highland Road. The highway was closed overnight as police investigated.
Police did not identify the victim and only said on Monday afternoon that the motorcycle may have run a red light when it hit the truck which was turning left. Akerley was killed at the scene while the driver of the pickup was not injured.
“I’m crushed, I had plans with him tomorrow. I still can’t believe it,” Kaleena Hammond said in a facebook comment on Monday night.
Added Rick Richet, “R.I.P Donavin Akerley. I will miss you [brother]. WOW. I was just talking to him so crazy how short life is.”
According to the BC Court Service Online database, Akerley has a long history of driving offences in both Kamloops and Kelowna, including driving while prohibited.
Kamloops RCMP are still investigating the cause of the crash, while B.C.’s police watchdog is looking into whether police actions or inactions were linked to the man’s death. The IIO BC investigation comes as Akerley had allegedly passed an officer in a marked police van just before the crash happened.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the crash is asked to contact the IIO BC’s witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or via the online contact form.
