Police say an hours-long standoff with a huge police presence at a motel in Kamloops on Monday came after a report of a gunshot being heard.
Mounties gathered at the Motel 6 before 11 a.m., on the East Trans-Canada Highway Frontage Road, and had the road blocked off for hours with the motel evacuated.
There were upwards of a dozen police vehicles on scene, between Kamloops RCMP, the K9 Unit and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, and officers with guns drawn were highly visible from passing traffic on the highway.
NL News watched three different men be arrested at the scene, all of whom were released and walked away after being questioned.
Police say each room of the motel was searched but there was no evidence of a gunshot being fired, with no damage and nobody hurt. A daycare nearby was also placed on hold and secure.
Kamloops RCMP are saying “thank you” to the public for cooperating while police were investigating, and are asking anyone with information to call police at 250-828-3000 and reference file number 2021-34968.
That was the second large police scene at a Kamloops motel yesterday. The first happened less than two kilometres away at the Canada’s Best Value Inn, on the east end of downtown. That scene started when a wanted man was spotted, who was linked to a robbery of Lordco in downtown Kamloops on August 3. That scene was cleared about four hours later after the suspect was arrested.
So far, there is nothing that links the concurring police scenes to one another.
