Kamloops RCMP now say the person found dead near Mission Flats Road on Friday afternoon was the victim of a homicide.
A body was discovered along the Thompson River at about 4:15 p.m. on Friday, after Kamloops Fire Rescue responded to a suspicious fire not far from the Mission Flats landfill.
The person has been identified as 29-year-old Kamloops resident Adam Hibbert with RCMP saying his death was targeted and that there’s no risk to the public.
“Members of the Serious Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Section, and other specialized units have been working around the clock on this investigation since the discovery of the body on Friday and the evidence collected thus far has revealed the death to be a homicide,” Kamloops RCMP Investigative Services Sergeant, Nestor Baird, said.
A cause of death has not been confirmed.
Hibbert has a criminal record dating back to 2010 with a number of serious charges, including uttering threats, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, forcible confinement, and possession of stolen property over $5,000, among many others.
He was also one of three suspects in an Aug 3 robbery at the Lordco on Battle Street.
Another suspect, Tristan Fernandez, was arrested yesterday at Canada’s Best Value Inn on Columbia Street, though RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn told NL News that Fernandez was taken into custody on an unendorsed warrant related to the robbery and not the homicide investigation.
Evelyn says police are especially curious about Hibbert’s movements on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
