The families to two Thompson Rivers University students who were killed in a Nov. 2019 hit and run in downtown Kamloops are suing, among others, the driver who fled the scene.
According to court documents, the families of Feyisola Adebowale, 27, and Daniel Okocha, 22, have each filed civil claims against Reid McKnight.
The two men were killed in an early morning crash at First Avenue and Battle Street. Their families are each seeking funeral expenses as well as expenses incurred to attend the funeral and lost wages, though no dollar amount was listed on the documents.
A third man, Kelvin Adeojo, 30, died in hospital nine days after the crash. He too has been named a defendant in the suit as court documents say he was driving the Dodge Charger which was carrying four Nigerian students or alumni from TRU. A 24-year-old man who was also in the car at the time suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The owner of the Dodge Charger, who was not identified in court documents, has also been named as a defendant in the civil suits.
McKnight, who was behind the wheel of a Ford Ranger pickup truck which ran the stop sign, is facing three counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident.
He was briefly arrested after the crash and released without charges, and was only charged by police in Sept. 2020, almost 10 months after the crash.
None of the allegations against Reid McKnight have been proven in court. He is also being sued by BC Hydro who want $17,089.23 in damages for the cost to repair or replace equipment that was damaged in the crash.
