If you have pets that were left behind in Merritt, chances are you’re reached out a police officer who’s on the ground.
Const. David Feller, Merritt’s own pet detective, has been working double-duty to reunite pets with families displaced by floods.
In a statement, Merritt RCMP say in between patrols and answering calls for service, Feller has been saving birds, cats, lizards and hamsters from homes in evacuated areas.
In some cases, he reached out to residents on facebook directly asking for details about their pets and where they might be.
“Dave has been an amazing support to the community as we work through the floods,” Merritt RCMP Sgt. Josh Roda said. “We are lucky to have him as a part of our close-knit team.”
Roda says the Merritt detachment has received a generous donations of animal food and supplies from local businesses to allow Const. Feller to save as many pets as possible.
The entire City of Merritt was evacuated on Monday, Nov. 15, though some residents were allowed back home yesterday, Nov. 23.
People who need help saving their animals or if they have questions about the evacuation order are being told to call Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
