A woman in her 70s was killed in a four vehicle crash yesterday afternoon, Nov. 24, on the Yellowhead Highway near McLure, north of the Fish Trap Rest Area.
The head-on crash between two semis happened just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
BC Highway Patrol say a northbound semi crashed into a southbound semi. The driver of the northbound vehicle suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries, while the driver of the southbound southbound semi was not injured. The woman who was killed was a passenger in the northbound semi.
In an email, BCEHS told NL News that two patients were taken to hospital – one in serious condition and one in stable condition.
“Three paramedic units, a paramedic supervisor and a community paramedic who was in the area responded to the scene,” a spokesperson wrote.
BC Highway Patrol Spokesperson Cpl. Mike Halskov says two other vehicles were also involved in the crash, adding both drivers suffered non-life threatening injuries.
“BC Highway Patrol has conduct of the investigation with assistance from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch and the BC Coroners’ Service,” Halskov said.
“The cause of the [crash] remains under investigation, however road and weather conditions are believed to be contributing factors. BCHP recommends that motorists drive according to the road and weather conditions, have suitable winter tires and carry or use chains when required.”
The highway was either totally or partially closed for about 14 hours as a result of this crash. According to Drive BC, it was closed just after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, and only reopened in both directions at 5:15 a.m. Thursday.
“It was opened for a short time to single lane alternating, but had to close again as they recovered one of the trucks,” Halskov said. “So, in all, it was closed for nine hours, then it re-opened [briefly] before being closed again for a total of 14 hours.”
Anyone with information regarding this crash, including any dash camera video of either transport truck prior to the crash, is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol in Kamloops at 250-828-3111 and reference file 2021-5635.
