Truck stops in Kamloops will be busy today as drivers are being to stay put because of highway closures.
DriveBC has issued a travel advisory asking truckers to stay put in Kamloops “to prevent excessive congestion in Merritt.”
It comes because of a closure on Highway 3, about 5 km west of Princeton. With the Coquihalla and Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon washed out, Highway 3 is the only route for commercial trucks to move between the Lower Mainland and the Interior at this time.
Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said this week he’s expecting Highway 1 to open to essential travel in mid-January, while the Coquihalla could follow suit at the end of January.
DriveBC said Highway 3 could reopen at 11:30 p.m. tonight.
Truckers have been told to expect an update on their situation at 5 p.m.
