Kamloops Fire and Rescue is reminding people once again about the importance of home inspections and properly working smoke alarms.
In a statement Tuesday, Life Safety Educator said people should check the status of their alarms to ensure the safety of everyone and their home.
“If you are unsure of the status of your smoke alarms or have not changed your smoke alarm in the last 10 years, KFR encourages you to test your alarms or to request a Homesafe inspection if you require assistance,” he said. “If your smoke alarms are not working, you can make a request with KFR, and arrangements can be made to install a new alarm for free.”
The Kamloops Homesafe Program was first started in 2018.
“[It provides] proactive public education on the importance of working smoke alarms and how to prevent fires in the home,” Pont said, noting that inspections are free and people will be given a written record of the inspections’ findings and recommendations.
During a Homesafe inspection, KFR members will:
– check your smoke alarms
– make cooking safety recommendations as more than half of all residential fires are caused by cooking
– check for safe use of electrical devices including extension cords and power bars
– discuss candle, match, and lighter safety
– go over your home fire escape plan
– cover a variety of fire and general safety topics
To request a smoke alarm or Homesafe inspection, go online here or call 250-320-7641. A KFR member will reach out to confirm eligibility and to set up a home visit.
