A ‘number of people’ who were part of the B.C. Curling Championships in Kamloops last week have since contracted COVID-19.
CurlBC spokesperson Doug Sarti says he’s not sure how many of the roughly 130 people who were in the Kamloops Curling Club from Jan. 4 to Jan. 9 have been impacted at this time.
“[We’ve been told about] a number of COVID cases that developed once the athletes returned home,” Sarti told NL Sports. “We’re just in the process now of trying to figure out how many there are out there. Not everyone has been tested yet and we haven’t heard back from everyone who was there, so we don’t know the full scope.”
There were no spectators allowed at the event and Sarti notes there were a number of safety precautions in place including masks, physical distancing, and mandatory vaccines.
There was also a zone system designed to keep players, volunteers, and media separate.
“We’ve contacted everyone who was there and let them know that if you’re sick, or if you have symptoms or if you are confirmed positive, let us know,” Sarti added, noting nobody exhibited any symptoms during the event.
In an email, Interior Health told NL Sports it did not have a case count for the event.
“If there are cases confirmed through testing they would not necessarily be attributed to IH as teams are from across the province,” it said.
There were eight women’s teams and 12 men’s teams involved in addition to volunteers, ice technicians, officials and members of the Kamloops organizing committee.
Mary-Anne Arsenault won the women’s title and a spot at the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Heart in Thunder Bay, while Jeff Richard took home the men’s honours and a spot at the 2022 Brier in Lethbridge.
