Ed LeBourdais has been elected as the new chief of the Whispering Pines/Clinton Indian Band for a two year term.
The band says Ed LeBourdais, who was a councillor, got 58 votes in his bid to replace former chief Michael LeBourdais, who chose not to seek another term.
Trevor Tresierra was the runner up with 44 votes.
“We are honoured to serve our community and look forward to building a future where we are upholding our Ancestral responsibilities while becoming major players in the regional economy of our traditional territory,” the newly elected LeBourdais said, in a statement.
“We will work with all our members and families to ensure a healthy and resilient future.”
Councillor Mathew Lewis and Councillor Sunny LeBourdais were also elected for two-year terms. Incumbent councillor Jack Bones lost his bid with 33 votes. Also running for council was Debra Van de Mosselaer (26 votes) and Jerry LeBourdais (12 votes).
The band says 104 of 171 eligible members cast ballots in what they say is one of the highest voter turnout rates in the Secwepemc Nation.
