The Kelson Group is making good on its promise to move as many houses as possible to make way for the City Gardens project instead of demolishing.
A home currently located at 435 Battle Street will be relocated a couple of blocks away during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 5.
It is the second house that is being moved but Kelson Group Vice President, Kelly Fawcett, said this second house is much larger and more complicated to relocate.
“This first home, people referred to it as the ‘Little Pink House, and it went up to McLure from 430 Nicola Street in December. That was a much smaller home so they didn’t have to take down power lines, that kind of stuff. This home was definitely a lot more complicated,” he said, noting the Kelson Group is again partnering with Nickel Brothers, who are experts in moving homes.
“They do all the difficult parts of coordinating all that. They have to get Hydro involved, the city is definitely involved, there are road closures and when they do this it is in the middle of the night.”
The Edwardian foursquare-style house that was built in 1910 will be relocated to the 700 block of St. Paul Street. The move is expected to take a few hours.
“Some of the older and historic buildings we have lifted and transported over the years have been as old as 100 to 150 years – everything from Victorian or craftsman masterpieces, to small, yet treasured neighbourhood bungalows,” Tim Nickel, the General Manager at Nickel Brothers said.
“For those interested in watching the move unfold, please remember that this is an active site with large equipment, and we ask the community to obey instructions of our personnel to ensure everyone stays safe.”
Fawcett told NL News there is one more home they plan to move with shovels expected to go into the ground for the City Gardens project within the next two to three weeks.
