As gas prices skyrocket, Kamloops RCMP are asking for your help after a string of gas thefts from trucks is recent days.
Const. Crystal Evelyn says there have been at least four mischief and theft complaints in the last two weeks involving pickup trucks that had their gas tanks drilled and drained.
She says on Feb. 27 and 28, vehicles on the 1200-block of Rogers Way and 1300-block of Hugh Allan Drive were targeted, while trucks on the 1400-block of Pearson Place and 2000-block of West Trans Canada Highway were targeted on Mar. 7 and 8.
“Whoever is responsible for these thefts is not just stealing gas, but creating a whole string of expenses far greater than the price of the fuel they’re making off with,” she said.
“It’s really important for people to be good neighbours and watch for any suspicious activity in their communities. If you see something suspicious, please call police, but also try to capture as much information about the suspects as possible, such as their license plate or description.”
RCMP also say that while a locking gas cap won’t prevent someone from drilling a gas tank, it could help keep deter thieves from targeting vehicles that sit closer to the ground.
“Parking in a secured, well-lit area, such as a garage or fenced enclosure can also be helpful for theft prevention,” added Cpl. Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP Community Policing Unit. “If you must park on the street, avoid dark and isolated areas. The more visible your vehicle, the better.”
If you have any information about these fuel thefts, you’re asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.
